Weekly Tech Round Up: The Day Biden Became Antitruster-In-Chief

Welcome to the weekend! The big news of the week landed Friday with President Joe Biden's signing of a sweeping executive order aimed at Big Tech, business mergers and prescription drugs.

New Digs 🏠

This week we learned that the startup that bills itself as the WeWork for bioscience professionals, Lab Launch, is building a space in Los Angeles' Atwater Village district. Freeway traffic included.

Not just that, but a Pasadena landmark that was once known for its BBQ will soon be the home of Motiv Space Systems, a startup that builds robots for NASA.

Betting On The Future Of...

Investors are making bets on L.A. startups, including Popshop Live, a platform that combines ecommerce with livestreaming—eBay meets TikTok, sort of.

Other L.A. startups that sealed serious moola from investors this week include:

  • Willa, an iOS app that pays gig workers immediately after they file an invoice. Investors believe Willa could soon tap into the wider freelance worker market in the U.S. that is estimated to be around 60 million.
  • DressX, an app that uses augmented reality to superimpose virtual outfits to show off on your Instagram. The bet is that content creators will flock to the mobile app to buy virtual clothes without the environmental cost of production, shipping and waste.
  • Crush Capital, a Beverly Hills-based investment company, is launching a new show series that the founders are calling it the "Robinhood for angel investing." Their pitch to investors is that Crush democratizes access to IPOs.
  • Repeat helps brands gauge when a customer may need to order a product again based on the behavior of the average customer. Investors back it because it could solve a common ecommerce problem for brands looking for repeat customers.

Did you launch a startup during the pandemic? Cate Luzio, founder of Luminary, says networking has been a cornerstone to her career, both as a banker and as an entrepreneur. Listen on Stitcher | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | iHeart Radio

Anna Barber returns to the L.A. Venture podcast to talk about why she joined venture firm M13. "It's a venture engine focused on the future of consumer that has a big voice in the market, and a big impact on the future of consumer behavior." Listen on Apple Podcasts | Stitcher | Spotify

🚨 EXTRA EXTRA 🚨

Twitter voted to cut the cord on Netflix. But Bank of America analysts say the streaming behemoth will be king of content, despite intensifying competition from Amazon, Disney Plus and HBO.

Also, if you like your fruits and veggies nice and ripe, there is a startup that promises to make your avocados (and other produce) last longer. Apeel says its edible coating is going to change the way the world eats produce. Say it with me, #avocadotoast for life.

Am I doing this right? 🤔

How to Navigate LA Tech Week 2026

🔦 Spotlight

Happy Friday, Los Angeles.

Next week, hundreds of tech events will take over the city, bringing founders, investors, engineers and creators together from October 12 through 18.

Calling LA Tech Week a conference does not quite capture the experience.

Presented by Andreessen Horowitz, Tech Week is a decentralized collection of panels, workshops, demonstrations and gatherings hosted independently by startups, venture firms and technology companies. There is no convention center or central stage. The programming stretches from Santa Monica and Venice to Culver City, Downtown, El Segundo and beyond.

In other words, the city is the venue.

AI remains the dominant theme for 2026, appearing across enterprise software, healthcare, finance, media and the creator economy. The schedule also reflects industries where Los Angeles has built a particular advantage, including aerospace, defense, robotics, advanced manufacturing, entertainment and consumer technology.

That range is what makes LA Tech Week distinct. It brings together the software companies shaping what comes next with the industries that already define Southern California.

The challenge is deciding where to show up.

Our advice: apply early and organize your schedule by neighborhood. Crossing from Santa Monica to Downtown may look manageable on a calendar created by someone who has never driven in Los Angeles.

To help you spend more time meeting people and less time crossing the city, we have organized each day’s events by location:

You can also browse the complete official LA Tech Week calendar.

Plan carefully, but do not fill every minute. The best conversation of the week may be the one that was never on your calendar.
