On this episode of the Behind Her Empire podcast, hear from Gail Becker, founder and CEO of Caulipower, a company that makes frozen pizza crusts, chicken tenders, tortillas and other offerings with a base of cauliflower. Caulipower products can be found in many national grocery chains. Becker scaled the company to over $100 million in revenue in less than three years.
Key Takeaways:
- Becker's parents are both Holocaust survivors who divorced when she was two years old. In elementary school, she shuttled back and forth between their Northern and Southern California homes, which built her sense of independence at a young age.
- An Auschwitz survivor, Becker's father said the cold was awful, watching people die around you was awful, but there was nothing like the searing pain of hunger. Food has always been a big deal in her upbringing.
- Caulipower, in part, is the result of the need to find nourishing and easy-to-make gluten-free food for her children who have celiac disease.
- Becker didn't share her entrepreneurial idea with many people because she didn't want to hear their judgement or unintentional discouragement. She had enough of her own doubt.
"I think one of the mistakes that a lot of founders make is they feel like they need to know all the answers....one of the benefits...of starting a business later in life is I feel really comfortable with what I didn't know. I wasn't afraid to admit it. And in fact, I had to admit it in order to hire people much more smarter and much better in those areas than I was."
"Know how the industry works. Follow those rules. Don't deviate, learn from the lessons of others and know everything about the industry that you're about to enter...On the flip side, you have to know which rules to break."
— Gail Becker
Gail Becker began her career as a broadcast journalist, worked in politics/government and spent years as a senior executive in corporate America.
